We learned about furs and related to adaptations and made Fox Fur Pom Poms
Learning about 'Erosion' in science by experimenting how sand gets to the beach.
Our Ski Trip to Mt. Sima
Story Workshops - We have now started story workshops every Tuesday. Students are given time to play with LOOSE PARTS and to create a story with characters, a beginning, middle, and end. They use these provocations to then write their story down into words! There were some interesting stories about powerful gems, lifecycles and evil creatures!
In our Landform unit in Social Studies we learned about where rivers begin through an experiment where we created our own mountains. We learned how rivers flow out to oceans or lakes.
In social studies we are learning about LANDFORMS. Students built volcanoes, caves, mountains, hills, plateaus, valleys, rivers, islands, etc. out of snow to consolidate our learning!
ART - We used painting to blend colours, used layering to add snow, and contrast with the dark trees to make these beautiful Northern Light masterpieces!
Socials - We learned how to make medicine bags. It was so much fun! Watch the slideshow!
Socials/Science - Dry Meat Making! We learned about how First Nations People traditionally made dry meat, and why preserving the meat was important. This was linked to decomposers in science. We learned that using smoke and taking the moisture out of meat helps to preserve food because decomposers like moist environments. We were to thankful to our friends at YFNED who helped make this possible! Check out the slide show!
Science - mold terrariums. We learned about 'decomposers' and then did an experiment to see what kinds of environments the decomposers liked the best! We experimented with adding sugar, salt, and darkness as a few examples!
Remembrance Day -
We got to see and try on some of the gear they wore during the War. We also learned about the 'Christmas Truce', and created some beautiful poppies with oil pastels.
Science - we learned about how plants get their mass and if air has a weight
The Grand Chief sent us a card in response to our letters about Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day! They even displayed our letters on the windows of the CYFN building downtown!
Watch our Halloween Slide Show of our walk to one of the SPOOKIEST houses in Porter Creek!
ADST - We designed, planned, and carved Pumpkins for Halloween. It didn't take long for them to go moldy!
LONG AGO PEOPLES PLACE Field Trip
We learned about traditional tools and hunting/trapping techniques. We ate bannock and learned about how First Nations people harvested berries. We also got to look at some traditional structures.

Truth and Reconciliation Day/Orange Shirt Day:
We talked about how students should feel in school, in comparison to how students felt in residential schools. We learned how to use the computer to upload images and how to manipulate fonts. We created feathers expressing how students should feel in school. We also wrote letters as part of our letter writing unit to the Council of Yukon First Nations about the importance of this day.

ART - we made mandalas to represent peace and unity using natural items found outdoors.
Learning about warm and cool colours in ART and linking it to our learning about Yukon Animals in our Biodiversity Unit.
Habitat Collages
Playing phonics games - POP and Boggle.
Cranberry picking and making muffins. We learned about cranberries, their health benefits, and how to identify them.
Check out some of our 'Grow Patterns' we completed in MATH using things found outside in nature!
In ADST (Art/Design/Skills/Technology) we made a plan/design to build a tower using only 2 materials (marshmallows and toothpicks).
Slides and Ladders Grow Pattern Math Game.
Picking soapberries and learning about our local plants and how First Nations used soapberries traditionally.
Watch the slideshow to see how we made Indian Icecream with the soapberries as part of our social studies curriculum. Berries, sugar, water and froth!
